We are very happy to offer the collected works of the great Karma Chags-med to the Tibetan Sangha.
Born near Ri-bo-che in the Ngoms district of Khams, Karma Chags-med received training from the most famous Nyingma and Kagyu masters of his day. Coming originally from the gnas-mdo bka-rgyud lineage, he was closely associated with the noted gter-ston gNam-chos Miigyur rDo-rje, who began to receive his revelations at around age 13, producing thirteen volumes of gter- before passing away at age 13. twentysomething.
Karma Chags-med was instrumental in giving practitioners access to these treasures.
A famous and beloved teacher of the dPal-yul tradition in Khams, Karma Chags-med may be best known for creating the Karma Chags-med Zhi-khro Thos-grol, the greatest and most elaborate sadhana of Karma Gling-pa s Bar -do Thos-grol, or Liberation by Hearing in the Intermediate State. One of his most beloved compositions is the bDe-smon, the aspiration to be reborn in the pure realm of Sukhavati. Although he is not famous for his elegant or poetic expression, the great intellectual intellect of the 20th century admired his simple and expressive language.
The practice and reincarnation lineage of Karma Chags-med reached dPal-yul's daughter monastery in Eastern Tibet, dPal-yul Dar-thang, founded in 1850 and guided in the early years by rGya-sprul Rinpoche (1830-1892) and his successor, Ha-sprul Rinpoche (1852-1935). Sprul's student, mChog-sprul Rinpoche (1894-1959), was the abbot of Dar-thang in my youth. My father, Sog-po Tulku, was one of lha-sprul's assistants and received the teachings of rnam-chos from him. At the age of fourteen, I was fortunate enough to receive these teachings in my turn from mChog-sprul Rinpoche.
This edition of the collected works of Karma Chags-med, comprising nearly 2,400 individual titles, is based on a sixty-volume edition originally produced by dKar-bzang bsTan-dzin, a disciple of Jam-dbyangs mKhyen-brtse Chos-kyi Blo- grains.
We are grateful that we have been able, over the past thirty-one years, to freely publish and distribute books like these.It was not easy to achieve - buddhism is still little known in the West, and we had to do our work without external support.
We hope that this collection and all our publications will be of benefit to the Tibetan Sangha.
